The veteran community in the US is a rapidly growing segment of the population which faces unique challenges in everyday life. These brave women and men who have dedicated their lives to the service of the nation often find themselves alienated and at risk once they return to their country. War veterans returning home often have to face severe conditions such as physical and mental disorders which are a direct consequence of their on-job experiences.
Apart from this there are also issues related to inclusion in the mainstream society. The needs and requirements of the veteran community are decidedly different; yet economic and social requirements such as jobs and housing are necessary. But veterans returning home often find it difficult to secure a proper job which matches their skill sets. There are also a large number of veterans and their families who are still lacking the basic facilities such as housing and shelter.
To help the veteran community integrate itself into the mainstream society, a number of initiatives have been taken. The following is a list of some of the most prominent programs and services offered for US veterans.

The Veterans Health Administration aims to help veterans and their families by providing an integrated health care system comprising of over 1200 health care facilities providing both inpatient and outpatient facilities.
Vocational Rehabilitation And Employment
The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) is another initiative of the Department of Veteran Affairs which aims to help veterans who suffer from disabilities sustained on the job to be financially independent. This is done by providing the veterans with suitable employment opportunities, educational help and even assistance in starting their own business.
Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program
The Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program (YRRP) is aimed at National Guard members, reservists and their families. The YRRP aims to provide relevant information to all persons concerned, both during as well as after the service period. Covering a gamut of services such as job training, health, legal advice as well as education, this program aims to provide all round benefits to the veterans associated with the National Guard.
Veterans Choice Program
The Veterans Choice Program, known commonly as VCP, is directed towards helping veterans by allowing them to receive care from a community provider. The cost of such care is borne by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In order to obtain the benefits of the VCP, the eligible veterans must be authorized by the VA to receive the care from a provider assigned by the VA’s network of care providers. The VA works closely with the veterans to determine the eligibility and other associated criteria to ensure that veterans receive the proper care which they deserve.
State Home Per Diem Program
The State Home Per Diem Program works with the veterans to provide medical homes and adult day care facilities to those veterans who need it the most. The eligibility criteria for admission to these homes vary from state to state, and some states even allow the veterans’ dependents to take up housing in these facilities. All payment is provided by the VA.
These programs and services are ultimately all aimed at one thing: to allow the veteran populations of the US seamlessly get back into a socially productive life, thus providing a safe environment for the veterans and their families, as well as the country as a whole.
